GPT Store intensifies the AI momentum
Buff / AoE / AI

In November 2023 OpenAI announced GPTs during their first developer conference. GPTs are custom chatbot derivatives from the core ChatGPT product and can be created completely with no-code by conversing with ChatGPT: GPT-ception anyone?

GPTs can only be created (and used) by users on a paid plan starting at $20/mo, but there is the possibility of creators recouping the subscription costs via an anticipated revenue sharing program. The program would work similar to other social media programs e.g. YouTube, TikTok, and most recently Twitter/X by giving builders a profit share based on their GPTs engagement.

However, it seems their monetization and growth strategies are at odds:

The release of GPTs comes out of users investing their time or money into prompt engineering to get their specific needs met by a generalized chatbot. Now that custom GPTs can be made for specific use cases e.g. logo making, resume review, code tutoring, etc. would there be a need for a hefty price for using a fraction of the capabilities offered by ChatGPT?

Subscriptions per GPTs at a lower price point would make the AI capabilities more accessible amd foster more competition. This financial model could operate similar to App Stores where creators get up to a 70% cut of their GPTs revenue.

Some things to consider:

  • price point of GPTs and ChatGPT Plus

  • rate of adoption of GPTs & ChatGPT Plus

  • rate of conversion b/t GPTs & ChatGPT Plus

The next-gen consumer OS is here with Apple Vision Pro
Buff / AoE / Mixed Reality

Despite the intense focus on AI Apple is blazing a different path with their announcement of Apple Vision Pro and their next-gen consumer mixed reality OS. Apple Vision Pro is Apple’s latest consumer product line launch since the Apple Watch an entire decade ago in 2014. However, unlike the Apple Watch which was used as an accessory to augment iPhone sales and expand their ecosystem:

Apple Vision Pro may be more ambitious and accessorize the iPhone.

Last year Apple showed off spatial video: a type of immersive content that captures moments with depth- as if you were reliving them.

Spatial videos are only recordable on iPhones and are made to be consumed on Vision Pro. Given we spend most of our time consuming content over creating this tilts the iPhone as an accessory (who wouldn’t buy one just to watch Reels and Shorts).

This capability is also free real (or is it virtual) estate for other companies to make immersive experiences. Here are some ways companies could leverage mixed reality experiences:

  • Online shopping with a 3D model projection wearing clothing of interest to view how it would look before purchase

  • Live entertainment can have stats and a 3D mockup to follow along as if ring-side

  • Pokedex-like behavior when at a zoo or outdoor hike to view information on animals and plants encountered (would definitely need a smaller form factor for this)

What would you use Apple Vision Pro for?

Notion pivots from all-in-one to a suite of products
Debuff / Productivity

In the last year Notion has been stepping up into the enterprise landscape as an underdog against Atlassian and Microsoft Office.

Their all-in-one product for notes, wikis, projects, etc. has been innovative against the comparatively bloated product suites offered by competitors. However, has their initial value proposition diluted with the announcement of Notion Calendar? Is this the start of a suite of Notion products?

Normally I may consider this a buff for the company, but the release of Notion Calendar limits users to the Google ecosystem, 2-way sync and integration with the core Notion product is not as robust or not present, etc. Still, I am eagerly looking forward to what they got cooking.

What do you think about their first major product release for 2024?

Geoffrey Moore’s bonfire analogy on the Lenny Podcast
Podcast / Product

This wouldn’t be a product newsletter without Lenny stealing a spot here! On a recent podcast he spoke with Geoffey Moore about how a product initial’s target audience needs to be narrow and focused:

By starting with a little kindling of paper shreds and sticks you can eventually ignite the large wooden logs with less effort.

Where was this advice when I first went camping? ( ps. sometimes you gotta move the match, but keep the same target)
